About the MHA Quirk Name Generator
Sometimes you've already designed the quirk — you just can't name it. This generator strips everything else out and gives you nothing but the name.
It uses the same prefix + suffix patterns as canon MHA quirks. Pick a type to bias the pool (Emitter → energy words, Mutant → body-part words) or leave it random.
The quirk name is your character's first impression on the reader. Before you've written a fight, before you've described the costume, the name has told the reader what kind of quirk this is. Take it seriously — roll several, say them out loud, pick the one that fits your character's tempo.

The Anatomy of a Canon Quirk Name
Prefix + Suffix: The Canon Formula
Canon MHA quirk names overwhelmingly follow a prefix + suffix formula. Half-Cold Half-Hot. Zero Gravity. Dark Shadow. Explosion (which is really "sweat-generated nitroglycerin explosion" compressed). Erasure. Fierce Wings. Even the "single-word" names like Overhaul are compound concepts. Our generator borrows the pool exactly — a large prefix set (energy words, matter words, biological words) crossed with a suffix set (Control, Manipulation, Generation, Absorption, etc.). The result feels immediately canon-authentic.
What Suffixes Actually Mean
The suffix does a lot of work — it tells you the quirk's action type. "Manipulation" implies control of pre-existing material (Momo's Creation is closer to Generation; Kaminari's Electrification is closer to Emission). "Generation" implies creation from the user's body. "Absorption" implies external → internal transfer. "Shield" or "Barrier" implies defensive. When you generate a name here, the suffix should match how you want the quirk to function.
Naming as First-Impression Design
A quirk name is the first thing a reader sees about a character. Before you've written a single fight, the name has already told them: is this quirk elegant or brutal? Precise or wild? Elemental or biological? "Feather Manipulation" telegraphs elegance and control. "Bone Growth" telegraphs body horror. The name is the mood. Roll several and pick the one whose vibe matches your OC.
Pro Tips for This Generator
- 💡 Say the name out loud. Some names look great on paper but stumble in dialogue. Your character will say their quirk's name mid-fight. Test it verbally.
- 💡 Match the name's syllable count to the quirk's tempo. Fast-tempo quirks (Explosion, Erasure) have short names. Slow-tempo quirks (Half-Cold Half-Hot, Fierce Wings) have longer names. Match rhythm to mechanic.
- 💡 Use the batch feature as a name brainstorm. Batch 20 gives you a name deck. Pick 3 favorites, then decide which quirk mechanic best fits each name.
- 💡 The name doesn't have to describe the mechanic literally. Deku's canon quirk is called "One For All" — descriptive of the transfer, not the effect. Your name can be poetic if the mechanic is clear from context.
- 💡 Avoid over-precise scientific names. "Molecular Vibration Manipulation" is a mouthful. "Shatter" is the canon-equivalent name for the same mechanic.
- 💡 Reserve compound names for showpiece quirks. Simple quirks get simple names. Compound names (Half-Cold Half-Hot) signal signature-tier abilities.
Example Outputs
Void Cascade
Emitter-flavored nameImplies both destruction (void) and rhythm (cascade). Good for a mid-tier ranged attacker.
Beast Awakening
Transformation-flavoredImplies a controlled unlock rather than a passive state. Suits a character with an animal-form transformation.
Prism Field
Emitter or TransformationImplies both light manipulation and area control. Ambiguous mechanic that gives you room to design.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ⚠️ Names that describe damage output. "Deathblast" or "Killstrike" aren't quirk names, they're attack names. Quirks describe mechanics; attacks describe effects.
- ⚠️ Names that leak the weakness. "Frost With Cooldown" telegraphs the flaw. Names should focus on the ability, not its limits.
- ⚠️ Reusing the same suffix. A cast where every quirk is "___ Manipulation" gets tedious. Vary suffixes.
- ⚠️ Names longer than the quirk's screen time. If a quirk only appears in one scene, a 5-syllable name is wasted. Save long names for main-cast quirks.
- ⚠️ Names that don't translate. If your fic is bilingual or has international readers, names with untranslatable puns fall flat. Test the name in a second language mentally.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the main generator?
Same name engine, but the result page focuses on the name itself. Great for brainstorming when you don't need the full profile.
Can I use my own keyword?
Yes — the Keywords field seeds the prefix directly. Type "shadow" and every result will start with Shadow.
Are these names copyrighted?
The individual words aren't. Combinations you generate are yours — use freely in fic, art, tabletop, or commercial fanwork.
Can I batch 100 quirk names?
Yes. Perfect for populating background characters or class rosters.
What if the generator gives me a name I don't like?
Re-roll. There are thousands of combinations — batch 20 and pick the winner.
Can I combine two names into a compound?
Sure — take any two results and hyphenate. "Frost Barrier - Dark Shadow" for example.
Do the names sound Japanese?
They lean English-neutral for accessibility. For Japanese flavor, mentally translate the prefix (Fire → Honō, Shadow → Kage).
Should the name give away the type?
Usually yes — a name like "Iron Skin" telegraphs Transformation, while "Fire Blast" telegraphs Emitter. But ambiguous names are also fine.
What about kanji-style names like "Half-Cold Half-Hot"?
The generator doesn't model compound descriptive names. For that, manually edit — take a generated name and expand it descriptively.
Can quirk names contain numbers?
Canon has "One For All" and "0-3-0" (Star and Stripe's attack). Our generator doesn't default to numbers, but you can add them manually.
